Sweden will support NATO open door policy, prime minister says in Kyiv

Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Anderson told a joint news conference in Kyiv on Monday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that Sweden "will support NATO's policy of openness".

NATO's "open door" policy is based on Article 10 of its founding treaty, which states that any decision to invite a country to join the alliance must be based on the consensus of all allies.

"What I can tell you is that if we become members, we will support NATO's open door policy," Anderson said along with Zelensky.

Sweden and neighbouring Finland concluded accession talks at NATO headquarters in Brussels on Monday. NATO said in a statement that the two countries formally confirmed their readiness and ability to fulfil the political, legal and military obligations and commitments of NATO members.

The two countries have been neutral for years, but support for joining NATO has grown since Russia invaded Ukraine.

Anderson also said Sweden was "open to further sanctions against Russia."

"I think there are different views within the EU about whether this is the right thing to do," Anderson said. "We're open to that," she added.

"Of course, I would like to personally congratulate Sweden and the Prime Minister on the historic decision at the NATO summit in Madrid that Sweden will accelerate its accession to NATO," Zelensky said.
