Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Guatemalan President Alejandro Jamate for his support during his visit to Ukraine on Monday.
"I thank Guatemala for its clear and consistent support for our country, the protection of our sovereignty, and its firm stance on protecting human rights and the fundamental freedoms and independence of every country," Zelensky said.
In a news conference on Monday, Zelensky said the cost of living was rising unfairly in dozens of countries and in Latin America "simply because of the decision of the Russian Federation as a country to destroy existing political and economic ties in the world. "
The leaders of the two countries also announced a visa-free agreement between the two countries, which Zelensky said would help develop business and social relations between the two countries.
"Guatemala reiterated its interest in buying Ukrainian agricultural products and in establishing industrial relations," Zelensky said.
Guatemala's president said his country was "disturbed by the pain and devastation that Ukraine is currently enduring, as I saw when I visited places where they felt the horrors of this confrontation."
"In one of the darkest moments of this century. We want to come here to reaffirm our full support for President Zelensky, who has united this country with his leadership, courage and great dignity," he added.
Giammattei urged the nations of the world to come together and put aside their differences: "The nations of the world, what if we join? What if we leave our differences behind and stop dividing? Are we putting humanity at risk?"
Zelensky said Jamatei's visit was the first visit to Ukraine by a Guatemalan leader in the history of relations between the two countries, and "usually the first visit by a Latin American leader since February 24 and in the past 12 years."
