Cristiano Ronaldo: Manchester United legend asks to leave club amid concerns over trophies and transfers

Ronaldo returned to Manchester United from Juventus last summer and scored 24 goals in 38 games; Manchester United failed to win a trophy for the fifth consecutive season and failed to qualify for the Champions League. Manchester United's stance is that Ronaldo is not for sale, and his contract is renewed for one year

Cristiano Ronaldo wants to leave Manchester United this summer amid fears he won't be able to fight for the club's biggest trophy.

The 37-year-old feels a desire to win more at the twilight of his career but thinks it may not be possible at Old Trafford next season. The 2021-22 season is the fifth time in a row that United has failed to win a trophy.

Ronaldo is also said to be concerned that United has not made any improvements to the squad in the current transfer window. Thirteen players have left the club this summer, but none have yet arrived.

Ronaldo has a lot of respect for Manchester United - especially the fans - and is said to be "in love" with the club, but if he stays at Old Trafford, next season will be the first in his career to not play in the Champions League season.

The Portugal international has never played in the Europa League - Manchester United will do so next season - and last played at Sporting Lisbon in 2002/03.

But despite Ronaldo's desire to leave, United's position is that he will not be sold and hope he sees the remainder of his contract, which expires in the summer of 2023.
